Furniture making
cutting optimizer
Melamine board, laminated chipboard, MDF — professional cutting plans for furniture manufacturing.
Start optimizingIn short
CutOptim is a panel cutting optimizer for furniture makers: it lays out every part of a job on your melamine, MDF or chipboard sheets. Import the parts from CSV, mark the banded edges and print a numbered plan for the saw; every plan uses guillotine cuts a panel saw can run.
Why is furniture cutting so hard to optimize manually?
Modern furniture production needs many differently sized parts in a single project. A wardrobe system can have dozens of elements in a dozen or more sizes, and checking by hand whether another arrangement would save a sheet is nearly impossible.
How does CutOptim handle complex furniture projects?
Upload all parts from CSV, specify your stock sheets, and CutOptim generates the cutting plan in seconds. Edge banding requirements can also be considered.
Industry at a glance
CSV import
Import your complete parts list from Excel/CSV — seconds instead of minutes.
Multiple stock sizes
Different sized and thick stock sheets in one project.
Project save
With Pro subscription, save and reload your previous projects.
How does it work?
- 1
Bring in the parts
Import the parts list from your design software as CSV, or start from one of the five furniture templates and edit the sizes.
- 2
Add boards and banding
Enter your board sizes — one cut per board thickness — and mark which edges of each part get banding.
- 3
Run, print, cut
Optimize, then print the PDF plan with numbered parts for the saw; the banding is totalled per type.
Common use cases
Real-world scenarios where cutting optimization makes the biggest difference.
Office furniture
Desks, filing cabinets, and partition walls in standardized dimensions. High repeatability makes CSV import from design software highly efficient.
Bedroom sets
Bed frames, nightstands, wardrobes, and dressers from the same material. Coordinate all pieces in a single optimization run.
Retail fixtures
Display shelving, counters, and gondola units for shops. Often produced in series with identical dimensions.
Modular storage systems
Customizable shelf and cabinet systems with repeating module sizes. The banding totals per type make the tape order exact.
A three-room wardrobe system needs 52 parts in 8 sizes (sides, tops and bottoms, shelves, dividers, doors, drawer fronts and bases, plinth) cut from 2800×2070 mm laminated chipboard, kerf 4 mm; sides, dividers, doors and drawer fronts keep their grain direction. "Before" is the same job cut one size at a time; "After" is CutOptim mixing the sizes on each sheet. Both results come from the optimizer itself, for this one job.

Common furniture materials
| Material | Standard sizes | Kerf | Tip |
|---|---|---|---|
| Laminated chipboard (LMDF) | 2800×2070, 2620×2070 mm | 3.5–4.0 mm (panel saw with scoring) | Mark banded edges per part — the tape is totalled by type; add your own margin to the order |
| MDF (raw or painted) | 2800×2070, 2440×1220 mm | 3.0–3.5 mm | No grain — always allow rotation for maximum yield |
| HPL (High Pressure Laminate) | 2800×2070, 3050×1300 mm | 3.5 mm | Expensive material — optimization has highest impact here |
| Plywood (furniture grade) | 2500×1250 mm | 3.0 mm | Face grain matters for visible parts — use rotation control |
What does CutOptim not do?
- It does not drive a panel saw or a CNC router: the plan is a PDF, a CSV or a DXF outline file, and the machine program stays in your CAM software.
- Furniture templates give a starting parts list for five cabinet types; any other design comes from your own drawing or design software through CSV.
- Banding lengths are exact geometry with no allowance — add your own margin to the tape order.
Automate it — the Engine API
Furniture panel cutting is a 2D problem, and the same engine that runs here is available over HTTP — so a configurator or ERP can price and plan a cabinet run without a browser. Send the parts and the sheet stock as JSON; get back the layout, the guillotine cut plan, the yield and the total material price.
- ✓Attach a meta object (article number, order line) to every part and it comes back on each placed piece.
- ✓minimizeCost ranks layouts by total material price, not just sheet count — and returns totalPrice.
- ✓Deterministic: the same order always produces the same plan, for reproducible quotes.
